Your Mind Wanders

thepsychmind:

I think we’re all aware that our minds wander at times, but do you know how much? According to Professor Jonathon Schooler, our minds wander as much as 30% and sometimes even as high as 70% depending on where we are. Having a wandering mind has its pros and cons because we can miss out on information but it also encourages creativity and allows us to keep important info in mind while doing something else. So the next time your mind starts to wander, embrace it, it can be a good thing!

Strong words to use on a Resume

If you have ever had to write a resume for work or for an application, then you know the hardest part is figuring out what type of words to use that sound professional and and intelligent.

Example: If an application asks you if you have any relevant experience for a job at a day care center and you have experience, like you have babysat children. You would look at the words in the columns to see what words you should use that will help your resume stand out. You might put down “Have supervised and attended to children on a regular basis.”

I hope this is helpful to you.

Now this is a great resume list of action words.  I love that it’s broken down by types of jobs.  Saving for future use.

What's a creative journal? I write every day in my journal but I feel like I don't get creative enough, I just write. Any ideas?

journaling-junkie:

A journal is in itself a creative form of self-expression, only entries included. But, a “creative journal” is a journal that you write entries in as well as any other things you might like to add.

Here are some ideas for you that you might experiment with:

1. Smashbook. A journal in which you paste odds and ends, pictures and descriptions, cloth patterns, and keepsakes. It is a lot like a scrapbook, except a bit more personal.

2. Burn Book. If you are the type that needs to vent, this is the journal for you. Paste the pictures of the people you dislike and write out your angsty words to your heart’s content. (Think Mean Girls.) Hopefully, this isn’t what you need.

3. Art Journal. Use paints, watercolors, crayons, and stencils to bring vibrant self-expression to your life.

4. List Making Journal.  This is simply a place where you can keep your grocery lists, bucket lists, and a list of all your favorite things. I recommend list making because it allows you to dig deeper and challenge yourself to think about who you are from the inside out.

5. Travel Journal. Snap pictures as you voyage the world and observe its strange and wondrous people, places, and things. Post the pictures of your adventures in your journal or on your online blog and write a story about your experience or a simple description. Some even venture as far as to sketch a map of the country they traveled to.

I took the liberty of looking up another helpful link for you. (*Note: this link is not mine and I give full credit to the writers who made this site possible for journalists.)

http://self-help-self-improvement.knoji.com/20-different-types-of-journals-you-can-keep-to-improve-your-life/

I hope this helped. Good luck to you on your journey to find your creative journalistic spark!

To any younger artists fretting about not yet having an ‘art style’:

enjouji:

andythelemon:

1) stop focussing on trying to ‘get’ one because that’s an unhelpful mentality and style is an abstract concept anyway. Worrying about it will probably hinder your progress. Ok good, now:

2) get ur butt to a life drawing class, if that is not an option then just do some observational studies in the park/draw your dad/dog/friends/whatever! Use real life/photo references whenever possible.
Basically brush up on your technical skills. Don’t try and stylise these, the point of doing studies is to train your eye to see things as they are so you can break the rules later. Emphasis on ‘later’!
Even if someone has a very unique aesthetic, it’s usually glaringly obvious when they haven’t got the fundamental principles down.

3) stop looking at just Disney and your 2 favourite internet artists!! If you only ever look at, like, 3 peoples’ work there’s a good chance your art will turn out looking like a second-rate version of theirs. Go to galleries, read some art history books on cubism, find some weird indie comics idek just…absorb as much stuff as you can from all over the place. Your work will be an amalgamation of all your influences, so the more diluted and varied these are, the more unique your stuff will be. Yay!

4) do not expect overnight results! Keep doing the 2 things above and you will get somewhere with time. More importantly please don’t stress about this because art should be fun and we were all there once. You can do it!

ALL OF THIS^^^^

How to make a character’s death sadder

twlboaj:

the-uterus:

peachdoxie:

thehellspawnhero:

shuttle-fly-blogs:

iceb0x:

stevraybro:

the-right-writing:

  1.  Don’t have them die of old age after a long, fulfilling life. Many people don’t even think of this as sad (note that this can still work if you have enough of the other factors).
  2.  Leave one of their major goals unfinished. The more enthusiastic they are about completing the goal, the sadder.
  3.  Give them strong relationships with other characters.
  4.  Make them fight against whatever is causing their death. Their ultimate loss is sadder if they struggle.
  5.  Kill them in the middle of their character arc.
  6.  Don’t describe their funeral in detail. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that long descriptions of funerals kill the sadness.

That’s enough Satan’s publisher…

>B)

7. If possible, try to kill them off in the middle of the story, so we had time to like them and we will have time to let the loss settle in.

8. Also, place surviving characters in a situation where having the deceased person there would help them get out. You can choose whether you will point this fact out or if you want the audience to make the connection themselves.

image

9. Make them die by sacrificing themselves to save someone they love from a danger created by the antagonist.

10. Let the character realize seconds before they die that they’re about to die, and show how scared they are of that fact.

11: Heavily imply that they’re going to be a major character all the way up until they die. (I call this the “Kamina Effect” but that’s only because his name is catchier than Ned Stark’s.)
